Saint Peter Basilica (Vatican City)

saint peter basilica rome

The Saint Peter Basilica is one of the biggest churches in the world and the most visited, and it's part of the four Papal Basilicas to visit in Rome.

It represents the center of the Catholicism.

Here take place the more solemn services such as those of Christmas, Easter, the Holy Week, the announcement of the new Pope, the Pope funerals, the jubilee opening closing, and the canonization of the new Pope.

The Saint Peter Basilica was built by Costantino in the exact place where Peter was buried. In the course of 200 years, it was modified, rebuilt, and refined by many artists, some of them very famous such Michelangelo, Bernini, Bramante.

The Basilica's dome, designed by Michelangelo, is without doubts its strong suit, unique and unmistakable. Inside you can admire one of the most touching sculpture: the Pietà (the Pity).

The square that frames the church was designed by Bernini is one of the most famous and big, it's spooning by a beautiful colonnade made of 284 columns and 88 Tivoli travertine pillars.

Standing in two precise positions, signaled by two porphyry disks of the obelisk sides, there is a wonderful optical effect where the colonnade seams made by only one single column line.

Nowadays is also possible to visit the Saint Giovanni Paolo II tomb, along with those of Saint Peter, Pope Pacelli, Pope Montini, and Pope Luciani.

The visit is free and can be done from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. My tip is to go early in the morning to avoid the crowd.

Once there you may also consider to climb on the terrace of the Dome to enjoy of a beautiful view of Rome.

Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica

Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica rome

The Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica is one of the four basilicas of Rome and is dedicated to the Vergin Mary.

Legend says that the Vergin Mary appeared to Giovanni and Pope Liberio in a dream asking them to build a Basilica in her name.

She said to them that a miracle would have shown the exact place where to build the church. The following day, August 5th, it snowed on Colle Esquilino and the Pope interpreted that as the "sign".

Every year, on that day, the miracle is remembered with a white petals' rain.

Saint Clemente Basilica

basilica-san-clemente rome

The Saint Clemente Basilica, built in the XII century, is dedicated to Pope Clemente I and it's connected to the Dominican convent.

It's not an important Basilica but it is a witness of an old Italian legend. Inside you can see the "Leggenda di Sisinno" fresco, that represented the Saint Clemente miracle.

Sisinno was a pagan that wanted revenge over Clemente, guilty for having converted his wife to the Christianity. Sisinno ordered three slaves to take Clemente and chain him down. But then they discovered that Clemente was free and instead of him there was a column chained.

This representation is important because is similar to a comic where show up for the first time the Italian Vulgar.
